Documentary Heritage Program Advice

The Regional Archivist is available to provide free advice to historical records repositories on developing and improving historical records collections. This can be done via telephone, email or site visits, depending on the nature of the question. Questions as all-encompassing as how to create a historical records program from scratch and as small as what types of folders should be used to house documents are welcomed.

Organizations, businesses, ethnic groups, religious groups and others who have not yet collected their records and made them available for research may contact the Regional Archivist for advice on how to begin such a program. The Regional Archivist is also available to assist people wishing to donate historical records in locating a suitable permanent home for the records.

Should a question be too complex for the Regional Archivist to address, she will direct the questioner to other resources, such as print material, local mentors, and paid consultants.

The Regional Archivist cannot provide conservation advice on individual documents. The New York State Library’s Conservation/Preservation Program or the Northeast Document Conservation Center may be able to assist with repair or stabilization of individual items.

Documentary Heritage Program Email List

The Capital District DHP offers an email listserv open to anyone who is interested. At this point it is a low traffic list; usually there are less than five messages per month. The list is used to announce training opportunities, events at area archives and historical societies, and other time-sensitive information. To be added to the list, send an email message to Susan D'Entremont with your name, email address, and institution, if any.
