Event Description The Central Asylum School for the Deaf and Dumb offered educational and occupational instruction in the hamlet of Buel, in the Town of Canajoharie from 1823 to 1836. Students from across New York State attended this school in an early period when the deaf population was considered to be unproductive in society.

Type of Program Lecture on the life of Wesley O. Howard, NY Supreme Court Justice
Event Description The life and career of Wesley Otis Howard, a Grafton native who became a NY Suprteme Court Justice will be presented by Dr.Paul Ward, retired proferssor of history at the University of Albany, NY. The lecture will feature excepts from Mr. Howard's publications and historical data about him, his career and his family. Archival material from the collection of the Grafton Historical Society was used as well as many other resources.
Comments This lecture is part of the Grafton Historical Society's contribution to Grafton's bicentennial celebration, highlighting some of Grafton illustrious persons.

Event Description The Sand Lake Historical Society is proud to announce that on October 1, 2007, their second Images of America book on the Town of Sand Lake will go on sale. On October 18th at 7:00PM at Algonquin Middle School a narrated presentation selected from over 200 new pictures of the Town will be given at a reception for Images of America; Sand Lake Revisited. Preorders may be picked up and the book will be for sale. The cost is $21.50 each and includes NYS sales tax with $3.00 for each book shipped. The event is free. Refreshments will be served. Event Description Exhibit of photographs taken during Ballston Spa's

1907 Centennial celebration. Each photograph features a familiar landmark

in the village "dressed to the nines." Also, during Ballston Spa's

Sesquicentennial in 1957, people created a time capsule. The time capsule was opened at Brookside Museum in March 2007. The contents of the time capsule are on display at the Museum

Event Description Beginning October 1, 2007 microfiche Indexes to the New York State Department of Health Vital Records will be available at the Crandall Public Library's Center for Folklife, History & Cultural Programs.
This index is only available in five other locations in New York State. It is an index to birth, marriage and death certificates filed with the Department of Health since 1880. It covers the entire state except New York City. Index entries provide name, date, place of event and state certificate number. Indexes for births become available for use by the public after 75 years, marriages and deaths after 50 years. Indexes must be used on-site, and an appointment is necessary.
Note The Center for Folklife, History & Cultural Programs is currently housed at the address above. It will return to Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls by 2009.

Photo Contest
Event Description Open its regular hours, the History Center will feature an exhibit of photographs from the collections of the History Center, and visitors can observe the glass-plate negative and negative inventory and re-housing project that is going on. Visitors may peruse the photo collections, and help us identify photographs. Visitors are encouraged to bring in their historic photo treasures depicting events, places, and people, to donate to or deposit in our archives. Donated photos will be scanned. Photos will be entered in the month-long contest to find the most unique photograph depicting some aspect of City History. The winning and runner-up photos will be featured in the Schenectady Gazette's history page.

Event Description Bill Schaefer, president of the Schenectady Wintersports Club and whose family has had a rich history with the club, will present this program. Bill will complement his lecture using 1930’s movies, pictures and documents. His focus will be on the origins of the first trains from Schenectady as well as how they changed skiing and their developmental influence on the Adirondacks. The Schaefer family had an enormous influence on early skiing in the Adirondacks. Bill’s father, Carl Schaefer, began the first known ski school in the state in North Creek in 1934.

Event Description Marty Podskoch, author of three books on the history and lore of fire towers in the Catskills and Adirondacks, will tell us about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). 2008 is the 75th anniversary of the founding of the CCC in 1933 at the outset of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. The presentation will contain pictures and stories Marty has gathered from interviewing CCC members and their families, many of them in the Adirondacks. Along with his presentation, Marty will involve the audience, and relate stories from his latest book, Adirondack Stories: Historical Sketches.

Event Description Discussion of the growth of the Fort Edward pottery industry, the companies and their products, and the manufacturing processes used during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Paul McCarty, Executive Director of the Old Fort
House Museum since 1989, shares a history with the Fort Edward pottery industry as a member of the Hilfinger family. Hilfinger Brothers Pottery was in business from 1890 to 1942, the longest
running pottery company in Fort Edward, a center for the industry.

McCarty¹s talk supplements the current exhibition "A Durable Legacy" at the Old Fort House Museum in Fort Edward.

Event Description A continuation of an earlier discussion of procedures and materials helpful in the preservation of family documents for both use and storage. In addition to reviewing aspects of
archival care in the home and distribution of handouts, Anderson will include a discussion of mold, its causes and prevention. She will also address issues of paper, electronic, and digital storage using CD¹s, tapes, harddrives, or other contemporary capabilities, their permanence and cost effectiveness.
