Event Description The University Libraries invites past and current members of the State College News and Albany Student Press for a demonstration of the online historical student newspaper database and hear about recent developments in the University’s Journalism program. With support from the Friends of the Libraries, the Libraries’ M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections & Archives has scanned and indexed the State College News, 1916 – 1963, and the Albany Student Press, 1964 –1985. Come learn how to search online and print specific articles from your class years. Current members of the student newspaper staff will also be on hand. Coffee and refreshments will be available. Event Description The third biennial Western Frontier Symposium explores the ways that transportation improvements changed the culture, economy and social life in the Mohawk Valley from 1700 to 1890.

Saturday's speakers will present insights into various aspects of the region's transportation history.  Sunday is devoted to talks and tours at historic sites throughout the region.  The sites will have special exhibits and speakers related to transportation history.

Type of Program Candlelight Tours with Readings
Event Description This evening celebrates New York State Archives Month and features readings from 18th & 19th century letters and journals. Visitors will be led through select rooms in the Old Fort where they will stop and listen to chosen excerpts. This years selections include, but are not limited to, the 19th century letters of Caroline Frey Winne, wife of a US Army surgeon. Stationed in Nebraska and Wyoming Territory from 1874 to 1880 Caroline wrote numerous letters back to her family in New York, especially to her brother Samuel L. Frey in Palatine Bridge, NY. Also included will be an August 4, 1757 news item from The Pennsylvania Gazette describing an attack on Old Fort Johnson. Admission is $5.00 for this guided candlelight program. Tours will be given approximately every 20 minutes from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Event Description An exhibit of documents relating to the =Anti-Rent Wars of New York State, particularly in Grafton and Rensselaer county 1839-1885 including lists of members of the Grafton Anti-Rent Assoication,  receipts for payments made to the organization, excerpts of letters written about the Calico Indians activities in Grafton by family members dated 1860's and newspaper accounts of the murder of Elijah Smith in 1844. Also photographs of the only known Anti-Rent War banner in existence which hangs in nearby Grafton Town Hall.

Event Description "The Most Beautiful Land": Schenectady County’s History celebrates the 200th anniversary of the founding of Schenectady County with an exhibit of artifacts, photographs and historic documents illustrating the history of Schenectady County.  “The Most Beautiful Land” will highlight not only the well-known aspects of Schenectady County’s history including the opening of the Erie Canal and the large impact General Electric had on the community but also the lesser known stories of the county.  Immigrants from around the world have called Schenectady home and their stories, through artifacts, photographs, and documents will be told.  Brand new research surrounding the experiences of both enslaved Africans, and later free Blacks will be unveiled including previously unexplored documents and artifacts such as the recently rediscovered book press given to Moses Viney from Eliphalet Nott.

Event Description This fall SCCC is celebrating its 40th Anniversary, 1969-2009.  The first students entered in September 1969.  To mark the occasion, Special Collections in Begley Library will have display case exhibits featuring photos, newspaper articles and memorabilia from the College's early days. There also will be an exhibit focused on the historical and cultural events of that time including the Vietnam War, the Apollo 11 landing on the moon and the Woodstock Festival.
Later in the year there will be an exhibit that traces the development of SCCC from its first building, the historic Van Curler Hotel, to its present campus.

Event Description The Efner History Center will be closed during the first part of October, but will reopen on Wednesday, October 14th, with an open house from 9-1 in celebration of Archives Month. During the month, activities featuring the black and white 1930's-1940's photograph collection from the Schenectady Department of Public Instruction (DPI) will take place. Visitors may watch an on-going demonstration of photo collection processing.  School photographs dating from approximately 1930 into the 1940s taken by White Studios and by P. Schuyler Miller will be on display. A short PowerPoint portfolio of photographs will be available for viewing.  In addition, visitors may enjoy looking at  issues of Schenectady Public Schools' yearbooks dating backward from 1939.  Regular hours at the Center 9-1 Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
