History of CaDiLaC Online
In 1987, the Regional Automation Advisory Committee (RAAC) began investigating the creation of a union catalog on CD-ROM which would contain bibliographic and holdings information for the member libraries of CDLC. The first edition of CaDiLaC (Capital District Library access Catalog) was released in 1990. It contained approximately 1.5 million bibliographic records and 2.4 million holdings statements for more than 500 academic, public, school, and special libraries.
With the publication of the 1990 Supplement, which was released in 1991, the Union List of Serials (ULS) was added to CaDiLaC. This original ULS contained approximately 33,000 bibliographic records and 85,000 holdings statements.
In 1994, CONAN, which offered dial access to CaDiLaC, was introduced.
CaDiLaC on CD ROM continued through eight versions (five complete editions and three supplements) until the last edition was produced in 1998. This final 5th edition contained approximately 2.4 million bibliographic records and 7.5 million holdings statements. The Union List of Serials contained approximately 36,000 bibliographic records and 93,000 holdings statements.
Because of the high cost of the CD-ROM product, the desire for more timely data and circulation status, RAAC began investigating the feasibility of creating an on-line version of CaDiLaC.
CaDiLaC Online, CDLC’s Virtual Online Regional Catalog (VORC), was made possible through the use of the Z39.50 protocol. This protocol maintains virtual connections between participating Z39.50 catalogs of the region. As part of our commitment to provide access to all member library catalogs, the Partial Union Catalog is maintained by the Council. This catalog contains bibliographic and holdings information for non-Z39.50 catalogs as well as catalogs not available through a direct link. The Union List of Serials also is available through CaDiLaC Online.
